Welcome

EXPERIENCE ENRICH

EXPLORE

This year, UA Parks & Rec was excited to introduce our new brand and pillars - Explore, Experience and Enrich – to help us reorganize and enhance how we share updates on our programs and services. The response from our customers has been very positive and we look forward to further expanding the use of our brand across all platforms in the months ahead. Construction of the Bob Crane Community Center continues to make great progress, with a target opening of Spring/Summer 2025. From an initial exploration of the feasibility for an Upper Arlington community center through to the detailed design process undertaken over the past year, community input has been critical to the success of this project. True to the spirit of keeping residents involved, as we transition to the final planning stages for this exciting new facility, additional opportunities for community input are on the horizon. In 2024, we plan to host a series of focus groups to learn how residents plan to make use of the Community Center, to help guide programming and operations. These focus groups will primarily take place virtually, while there may be some in-person opportunities based on topics. Focus Group Topics: • Adaptive Recreation – Youth • Adaptive Recreation – Adult/Senior • Aquatics – All ages • Arts, Music, Dance - Youth • Arts, Music, Dance - Adult/Senior • Education & Enrichment – Youth • Education & Enrichment – Adult/Senior • Fitness & Wellness – Youth • Fitness & Wellness – Adult/Senior • Sports – Youth • Sports – Adult/Senior • Teens (in addition to meeting at UA Middle & High Schools) • Community Center Operations (membership, hours, child watch, policies, parking) • Businesses The sessions marked “Youth” are intended for adults’ participation relative to thoughts and ideas on programs for youth. The “Teens” session is intended for current middle and high school students.

We invite you to register to participate in these focus groups now through January 2024. The group discussions will begin in February, and everyone registered will be contacted in advance of these sessions. Use the QR code to access the Bob Crane Community Center website and register today! Some highlights in this issue of the Activity Guide: EXPLORE • Parks offer an array of features and amenities especially during the fall-winter-spring seasonal changes • The Amelita Mirolo Barn and Thompson Park shelters are available for private gatherings • The Senior Center can be a respite from the cold and way to connect with fellow seniors

Park Updates & Capital Improvements

EXPERIENCE • Winter Festival is Friday, December 1 in Mallway Park from 6-8:30 pm • Santa’s Mailbox is open through December 13 • Valentine’s Date Night is Friday, February 9 at the Amelita Mirolo Barn ENRICH • Parent & Tot language art classes • Fencing for Fun • Winter Break & Summer Day Camps • Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia Series • The James Mobile Education Kitchen Series • The Egg-ceptional Hunt (for the not-so-young kids at heart) • Art Healthy – Therapeutic Art sessions highlighting the physical, mental and emotional benefits of art. As you look over the program offerings, remember that the PLAY UA financial assistance program is available for residents that could benefit from financial assistance. Program information including qualifications and the application for assistance, please visit UpperArlingtonOH.gov/play-ua/ . Winter is a great time to consider summer employment! It takes a considerable number of seasonal employees of all ages to fill our shifts so we can conduct programs and operate facilities. Check out opportunities to join our team at GovernmentJobs.com/careers/uaoh/seasonal. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable winter season.

More to Explore: Winter Capital Project Updates As the year draws to a close, the crews at the Bob Crane Community Center will be wrapping up the concrete structure and are scheduled to top out with structural steel early 2024. As work on the structure has advanced, the team has also made progress on the rest of the building, including the exterior envelop, which started being installed in late November. Crews are also working on the interior of the building, installing the many hangers and conduits that will be needed to facilitate the buildings mechanical systems. Also this fall, construction wrapped on the Northam West Athletic Field Renovations. The new grass has started to grow and City staff have taken over the day to-day care of the fields to get them ready for play. As a reminder, the fields will stay offline for the first year to allow adequate time for the grass to fully establish. Help us take care of this significant investment by not using the fields at this time, so that we can make sure they are in top shape when they are re-opened to the community. Finally, fall saw the completion of the design for the renovation of the Northam Tennis Complex, Park Service Building and surrounding areas. As part of the design process, City staff led an extensive community engagement effort to determine the best use of an approximately .44-acre area of the park that will be available as part of the renovation of the Tennis Complex. Based on community input and with the support of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, Staff recommended that the internal path system should be adjusted to provide more open space east of the Tremont Pool. It was also recommended that the remaining open space could be used for six permanent pickleball courts, which would realize an unmet recreational need for the community. City Council is scheduled to consider the results of the bid process in November, which includes the above mentioned items as bid alternates.

UPPER ARLINGTON ULTIMATE SLEDDING HILL GUIDE Did you know the City’s Park system offer six sledding hills? TIPS FOR THE SLEDDING SEASON SAFETY

Keep alert, cautious, and courteous to other users. Scan the area for clearance before setting off. Exit the slope and “run-out” area quickly. Ascend the hill away from the sledding path. Use of bike or ski helmet is strongly recommended, and no one should be headfirst sledding. RESTROOMS Most of our restrooms are closed for the winter. Thompson North shelter and Sunny 95 Amelita Mirolo Barn are open for use. PATH CLEARING SCHEDULE Cleared within 24 hours of a snow event: Fancyburg, Northam, Thompson and Sunny 95 Park.

LONG RUNS NORTHWEST KIWANIS – located between the baseball diamonds and the playground. Stay on the North side of the hill to avoid colliding with path users. BURBANK – located on the North side of the hill between Burbank and Northwest parks. The snow on the north face of hills is likely the last to be melted by the winter sun. THOMPSON – this is one of our biggest hills and can accommodate many users. Sledding is ONLY permitted on the South side of the hill. North side sledding is strictly prohibited because of Lane Road safety concerns. SHORT BUT STEEP REED ROAD - located in the outfield of Diamond #2. FANCYBURG – located in the Southwest corner of the park. MOST CHALLENGING SUNNY 95 – based on the City’s GIS contour map, Sunny 95 Park boasts our most challenging hill, at an approximately 29% grade. According to the standard ski trail difficulty ratings in North America, this would qualify it as a Blue Square/Intermediate level! Sunny’s hill is east facing, so it is best to get out early to enjoy this slope before the morning sun has melted the snow away.

During business hours: the rest of our park paths and sidewalks on all parks and city properties. All paths have the potential

to be slippery, remember to “walk safely, like a penguin”-weight forward, legs wide, arms out, and shuffle.

Campers must possess the ability to attend to personal care such as toileting, dressing, eating, and be able to follow general cues and instructions of staff. Campers who require 1:1 ongoing assistance with these tasks and campers with behavioral challenges may be asked to have an aide in attendance to promote a successful experience for the camper. A sack lunch and afternoon snack must be packed daily. Our camper supervision ratio is 3:1 utilizing college level students (or higher) within Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Intervention Specialist, Adapted PE, or other related health sciences such as PT, OT, SLP. The program is supervised by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Special thanks to Northwest Kiwanis for their generous support of the TR Day Camp each year. Questions? VIVIAN’S WATER METHOD WITH PASTEL 18+ YRS Vivian Ripley After the introduction of various pastel strokes and applications of color, we move quickly into Vivian’s water method. The first pastel application takes into account the desired spacial and tonal effect plus color combination. Next, a soft, wide, damp brush melds the application into the desired realization. When dry, colorful pastel accents complete the work. The painterly result is one of fluidity and richness, yet can be very realistic in nature. Painters with no pastel experience may also find the technique to their liking. The instructor demonstrates and guides each student through the process. All levels. One-hour lunch break.
