ABRAHAM LINCOLN | 50+ YRS Van Young 3/1 - Lincoln’s Plan to Colonize the Enslaved People: Unknown to many Americans, was Abraham Lincoln’s ambitious plan to help “colonize” the emancipated people during and after the Civil War. Lincoln had crafted a very detailed strategy of resettling the millions of the enslaved to the Caribbean, Central America and West Africa. This elaborate plan was cut short with the assassination, yet had the support of many within the cabinet. Was Lincoln prejudicial/racist or just trying to find a better solution for the freed enslaved people of the south? Lots of open discussion to follow. 3/8 - The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln: April 14, 1865, Good Friday, was a shocking day in American history. It was the day John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln. This act was part of a larger conspiracy to take out the upper echelons of our government. The talk takes us hour by hour through that tragic day and covers many of the aspects of this attack. 3/15 - The Hanging of Mary Surratt and the Lincoln conspiracy trial: On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt was hanged alongside three others convicted of playing a part in the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Who was Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt? An alleged collaborator in the plot to kill the country’s 16th president? Or a victim of circumstances? We learn about the life of this convicted conspirator, her arrest and eventual trial. She indeed was the first woman to be executed by the U.S. federal government. Was it justified or a travesty of justice? 3/22 - Boston Corbett: The Man who Shot John Wilkes Booth: Most of us know who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, but who is the man who killed John Wilkes Booth? Learn about the strange life of Boston Corbett, the Union soldier who disobeyed direct orders and fired the shot that eventually kills Lincoln’s assassin. Was it an act of patriotism or a chance for fame? Should he have been charged with murder or rewarded? A unique and strange character from our great historic past. 551522 A 10-11:30 am F 3/1-3/22 Senior Center Bldg 1, Rm 104 $20 O 4 sessions THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS 50+ YRS Gregory L.
