HISTORY THROUGH THE DECADES | 50+ YRS Van Young 1/5 - American History Facts and Trivia: An entertaining and educational presentation on various facts (both historical and unique) as well as trivia about our nation’s history. Covers everything from the founding fathers, entertainment, sports and culture. Audience members are asked questions and there is lots of interaction. A fun time for all while learning about our great country. 1/12 - Life at the time of the American Revolution: A different time...a different place...What if you were there? If you lived at the time of the American Revolution, which side would you have taken if you were forced to take a side? Would you have volunteered for battle? Before 1775, the 13 colonies in British America belonged to England. This presentation talks about the fight to be free and what life was like in colonial days. 1/19 - Famous Photos in History: As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and this presentation confirms just that. Many of the world’s most famous photos are displayed along with historic photos from our American past. Some you have never viewed and others you instantly recognize. Both entertaining and informative. 1/26 - The Assassination of John F. Kennedy: Arguably, one of the most controversial happenings in our American history. This talk reviews the events of November 22, 1963, the investigations and commissions that followed. 2/2 - Civil War Facts and Trivia: A fun and informative way to learn about the many facts, trivia, and oddities of our great Civil War. This talk challenges the group to see how much they know about the people, battles and events that occurred during this time. Many strange and bizarre occurrences are uncovered, as well as facts and figures that best define the enormity of this great conflict. Fast paced and enlightening. 2/9 - The Battle of Fort Sumter - First Shots of the Civil War: The first Battle of Fort Sumter began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate artillery fired on the Union garrison. These were the first shots of the war and continued all day, watched by many civilians in a celebratory spirit. The fort had been cut off from its supply line and surrendered the next day. The talk describes the events and decisions Lincoln had to make during the most desperate of days of his early presidency. 2/16 - Andersonville and the Trial of Captain Henry Wirz: The civil war prison called Andersonville is one of the true “horrors” of the civil war. Tens of thousands of soldiers die within its walls and its commander, Capt. Henry Wirz, is the only military man tried and executed for war crimes in the Civil War. This talk deals with the facts and history surrounding the famed prison and the trial and eventual execution of its warden. Did he get a fair trial or was he a scapegoat? 2/23 - The Life of William Tecumseh Sherman: General William Tecumseh Sherman was indeed one of the most recognized and celebrated generals of the civil war. His famous taking of Atlanta and March to the Sea, was the beginning of the end for the confederacy. Yet, his life was very controversial. Loved by northerners, he and his actions were despised by the south. Hero or despot?
