LIVING IN PIONEER AMERICA | 50+ YRS Van Young 9/17 - Wagons Ho: Getting Ready for the Oregon Trail: What drew people in mass to the western territories? What did people need to do to prepare for a months-long journey west? What type of wagon? How much to bring? What kind of animals to pull it? Tools, food and supplies. Major decisions, yet only a finite amount of space. 10/1 - Riding on the Oregon Trail: Once under way, what was life like on a wagon train? What were the dangers, challenges and obstacles? How long did it take and how did they cross all those mountains, rivers and dustbowls? What did the women have to endure? Disease, accidents and weather caused many hardships and deaths. Learn how perseverance and determination pushed people to the ultimate limits. 10/15 - Setting up the Homestead: Once settlers arrived in Oregon to stake their claim, it was time to build a cabin and start a new beginning. Yet, where did they live those first few months? How did they survive those terrible winters and build a cabin in the middle of nowhere? Sod vs wood? Crops versus cattle What was it like day in and day out to survive on the prairie with little to no help? Thousands succeeded, yet thousands failed. 10/29 - Daily Life on the Farm: What was involved in eking out an existence in the American west? What were the roles of men, women and children? What were the challenges of farming and the caring of animals? Were the children educated? How did technology finally make life easier for families? In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. Learn something new along the way. In fact, an evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit as a result of what they learned. A $20 AARP Member/$25 Non-AARP Member class fee is due to the instructor the day of the class. Exact cash or check payable to AARP.
