THE IMPORTANCE OF WHITE IN WATERCOLOR | 18+ YRS Vivian Ripley The white of watercolor paper functions in several very important ways. The shape of pure white can provide contrast and direct the eye to a center of interest. In addition, pure white paper enhances luminosity when layers of paint are glazed on the white surface. The elements of a successful composition come into play when white or light lines show the direction throughout the painting, involving the viewer in the process.
