NATURE DAY TRIPS Enjoy these opportunities for local exploration and fun! Transportation to and from the Bob Crane Community Center provided via the City’s 14-passenger shuttle bus. NEWARK EARTHWORKS & DAWES ARBORETUM | 50+ YRS Recreation Staff Visit the Newark Earthworks Museum and take a guided tour of the Great Circle, part of the Newark Earthworks. The Great Circle site consists of a circular earthwork formed by a tall continuous earthen wall encompassing 30 acres of land. The wall is lined by a deep ditch on the inside of the earthwork. The museum is located at the top of a slight incline with a paved pathway leading to it. Please note, there is no paved pathway into the interior of the Great Circle. Eat lunch at a local restaurant, then take a guided tour at Dawes Arboretum on an open-air wagon to learn about their vast tree collections and natural habitats. CEDAR BOG & AULLWOOD AUDUBON | 50+ YRS Recreation Staff Take a guided tour of Cedar Bog in Urbana. Cedar Bog’s boardwalk takes you through habitats that include a rare sedge meadow, a thick cedar swamp and a hardwood swamp where towering tulip trees reach for the sky. When June arrives, nature lovers come from far and wide for the spectacle of tall magenta and white showy lady slippers blooming at the same time as the much shorter but equally vivid grass pink orchids. Eat lunch, then explore Aullwood Audubon in Dayton, consisting of a nature center, farm and eight miles of walking trails on a beautiful 200-acre nature sanctuary. View The Troll That Hatched an Egg exhibit, one of only a few Dambo-created exhibits in the United States and Puerto Rico. The giant trolls Bo, Bodil, and Bibbi are made from locally sourced recyclable materials and are a permanent exhibit created especially for Aullwood Audubon. Visit Ash Cave, which has a short accessible trail leading through a magnificent gorge traced with elegant hemlocks. Next, head to the brand-new Hocking Hills State Park Lodge & Conference Center to dine at their Rock House Restaurant, featuring serene views of the park. Lastly, spend time at the Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center, located at Old Man’s Cave parking lot. The Visitor Center features interactive displays, exhibits and wildlife showcases about the Hocking Hills region. Visit with the park’s resident raptors, including hawks and owls, at the Raptor Enclosure behind the Visitor Center.
