THE KENT STATE SHOOTINGS-MURDER OR MISFORTUNE | 50+ YRS Van Young Sunday, May 4, 2024, is the 55th anniversary of the Kent State Shootings. We examine the events leading up to the shootings of May 4, 1970 and the aftermath, including the trial of the National Guardsman several years later. Should any responsibility be placed on the soldiers for this tragedy or did the students and demonstrators hold all the blame? We review the animosity that existed at the time between student antiwar protestors and the United States government. It began what would eventually become a 30-year war between the United States and plains natives, eventually leading up to the Battle of Wounded Knee and end of their way of life. The talk tells the story of how this war started, the conditions and events leading up to it and the results of three decades of western warfare. A sad, but true story of an American war. 6/18 - Custer’s Last Stand: The Battle of the Little Big Horn: This battle was fought on June 25, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory, pitting federal troops led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1839 76) against a band of Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors.
