WELCOME

The Community Center design team continues to progress through the design process. While this team finalizes details and prepares for construction bidding, the Upper Arlington Community Foundation is conducting their capital campaign. One component of their fund raising efforts is a match campaign in which every donation up to $5,000 will be matched until $250,000 is reached. This is an opportunity for your donation to be doubled and increase its impact on this facility. You can stay up to date with links for the community center design process at www.uacommunitycenter.com and the Community Foundation’s Capital Campaign, at www.togetherua.org. In this guide there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained and active this winter! Our popular Valentine’s Date Night at the Amelita Mirolo Barn is sure to sell out fast on December 7 so be ready to register at 6 am. Let us help keep your young children busy this winter with some music and movement classes or our introductory sports programming. Be sure to find all of the information you need for Summer Day Camp on page 12 of the Activity Guide. Registration for Summer Day Camp will open on February 9 at 6 am. Adults and Seniors can learn to “Paint Like Bob Ross,” brew your own beer, take part in some of our various fitness classes and adventure out with us for our many local day trips. Our Concourse Gallery schedule is on page 27. We start the year with a Hidden Beauty in Nature and then host three shows for our local school students which always brings a lot of energy and traffic to the gallery. We hope you will join us this winter for some of our many activities! Believe it or not, winter is the time to apply for seasonal positions, including summer operations. Several opportunities are available to join our team in providing our community a vast array of recreation programs and services. Information is available at www.governmentjobs.com/ careers/uaoh/seasonal. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable winter season. Take care,

Many of our residents enjoyed our programs, events and facilities this year, with our program participation and facility attendance exceeding pre-pandemic levels. We are pleased to see recreation continuing to be an important part of your activities. Our team takes pride in serving the community and providing recreational opportunities and is planning more great programs for the upcoming winter season. Part of our planning process is being creative as new programs and events are developed. A great example is the Arts on Arlington event the Cultural Arts Division initiated this year, in which local artists and artisans showcased their talents with musical performances, art displays, and art sales, along with community groups and a beer garden for a quaint event in Mallway Park. This event was well attended and due to the unique focus and venue, was awarded 1st place for Historical & Cultural Arts events by the Ohio Parks & Recreation Association, a state organization supporting the parks and recreation profession. As we look towards 2023, I wanted to provide an update on our PLAY UA Financial Assistance Program as we near the one-year anniversary of its implementation. PLAY UA was designed to support community members who face financial barriers that may prevent them from participating in the department’s programs and accessing facilities. PLAY UA is designed to meet affordability and accessibility goals identified through the 2018 Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Plan process that were endorsed by both City Council and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board. In the initial nine months of this program, 34 families are enrolled, consisting of 137 individuals, with $6,628 in financial assistance been reduced from fees so that community members can enjoy our programming and facilities. The program is funded through a $1 transaction fee charged to our customers who register for a program or purchase a pass. In addition to those funds, our customers have donated an additional $627 to support this program. We are proud of the great response with both recipients and donors resulting in our ability to assist families seeking recreation opportunities. For full program information, including qualifications and the application for assistance, please visit upperarlingtonoh.gov/play-ua/.

CIP Updates 3132 Family Sports Court Construction for the 3132 Family Sports Court was completed in October and the court is now open for play. The new court is 70’x150’ and features a dasher board system with a tempered glass containment shield, four new basketball hoops and lighting that will allow for evening play during the winter season. Lights will be available for public use beginning in the spring of 2023 and will be available on a timer from dusk to 9:30 pm. The new court has been named the “3132 Family Sports Court” in recognition of Kyle Vesper and Ned Smith, two former lacrosse captains that developed the same type of brain cancer. The City would like to thank the generous support of the Upper Arlington Lacrosse Association in making this project possible and looks forward to hosting a formal ribbon cutting in the spring 2023.

Parks & Forestry

Northam Park Unfortunately, bids for the

replacement of the Park Service Building and Renovation of Courts 1-3 came in significantly over budget, delaying this phase of the Northam Park Vision Plan. The City remains committed to implementing the goals of the Vision Plan and is actively exploring opportunities to realign the scope of work within the 10-Year Capital Improvement Program. In the meantime, work continues on the renovation of the western athletic fields at Northam Park. Bids for this work will be received by the end of 2022 and construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2023 with completion in the fall. This project completely rebuilds Diamonds 1 and 4, and also regrades the multipurpose athletic fields, and provides new under drains and irrigation for improved playability.

Special Event & Park Use Permit Requests The City has an application and permitting process in place for special events that require the use of City property and/ or City logistical and planning support. This includes quarterly submission deadlines in advance of a planned event, so that Staff have ample time to review all requests and manage its finite supply of equipment and staffing, while balancing its support of longstanding community events with new and unique event proposals. Park Use Permits are required for groups wishing to hold small activities on City park property that do not disrupt the typical public use of the park. Activities requiring a Park Use Permit are typically private, must be free to attend and must not be a commercial use. These activities have no concession sales or vendors, though donations to a non-profit organization are allowed to be collected. They also do not include tents or temporary structures. Park Use activities have limited event components, minimal safety concerns, and do not require preparation or clean up time by City staff. Park Use Permits are also required for all organized filming and photography activities taking place on City park property. For Event and Park Use Permits visit https://upperarlingtonoh.viewpointcloud.com/.
