Welcome

EXPLORE

I hope you are enjoying fall activities and visiting our parks this season. As you may be enjoying our current services, our team is busy planning for the operations of the Bob Crane Community Center in the spring. Before we get into details for the Community Center, here are a few service updates as you plan for the winter and upcoming program registration. • Summer Day Camp – in 2025, Summer Day Camp will expand to a fourth location due to the Upper Arlington School District offering a second school location. This will add an additional 80 spaces for children to participate next summer. See page 34 for program and registration information. • Rec Trac Resident Verification – over the past few months, residents were asked to verify their household account residency in Rec Trac, our registration portal. Upper Arlington residents receive early registration access and reduced fees on several programs and memberships. Any resident that has not completed that process should do so to avoid issues during registration and to ensure the correct fees are applied to all transactions. Residents creating a new household account can upload verification as they create their account. Bob Crane Community Center As you drive by the construction site, you will see the exterior and grounds looking complete. These areas are wrapping up while the interior construction continues to remain on schedule. The target opening is slated for spring. Once key construction schedules and delivery of furnishings are set an anticipated opening date can be planned. The parking deck on the northern section of the parking lot by Giant Eagle is open providing additional spaces for people visiting the Kingsdale Shopping Center and area businesses. The Community Center website contains information on hours of operations and fees for membership, daily admission, child watch, e-sports, rental spaces and party packages. At

this time, information is not available regarding the usage of Silver Sneakers ® or Renew Active ™ for facility membership; once information is available it will be shared through several communication methods. A section of Frequently Asked Questions provides information on several topics related to the operations of the facility. Actions for Customers In planning for making use of the Community Center, customers can prepare their household account and begin to make plans for private events, holiday gifts, and potential employment. Rental Spaces Reservations are being accepted for several spaces within the facility for functions beginning mid-May, including: • Fifth Floor Event Center: A large event space that can accommodate up to 250 attendees at round tables with adjacent gallery, skyline balcony, and green room with catering kitchen and audio-visual equipment to support your event. This space is ideal for wedding receptions, conferences, graduation celebrations and more. This facility can be rented in its entirety or as three smaller spaces. As a pre-opening special, any rental of the three-room Event Center booked in 2024 will receive a 25% discount. • Resident/Member and Non-Resident rates are available, with pricing scaled according to peak/non-peak days and holidays. As an example, the rate for a Friday or Sunday rental of the entire space will be $235 per hour for Residents/Members, and $353 per hour for Non-Residents. Information with rates for all days of the week is available online. • Gymnasium: The Main Gym with two regular full courts gymnasiums with wood flooring and the Auxiliary Gym with one full court and rubberized flooring. Each court is lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball and open for other uses. Each full-court gymnasium is available for $60 per hour for Residents/ Members, and $120 per hour for Non Residents.

• Program and Meeting Rooms: Six program rooms include multi-purpose rooms, a board room, fitness classrooms, and an art classroom. These spaces will be rented for $50 per hour for Residents/Members, and $100 per hour for Non-Residents. • Indoor Pool: While limited hours are available, the pool will be available for two-hour blocks, at $500 for Residents/Members, and $1,000 for Non-Residents. • Party Room: Located between the pool and playground, the party room is a great location for celebrations. Two-hour rental packages for 20 people will include just the party room (with access to the playground) at $125 for Residents/Members and $250 for Non-Residents, or the party room plus 10 admissions to the pool at $200 for Residents/ Members and $400 for Non-Residents. • E-Sports: This space will be available for 2-1/2-hour blocks at $300 for Residents/ Members and $600 for Non-Residents. This list is a sampling of rental rates and package available. A full list of fees is available on our website. Holiday Gift Cards We anticipate many residents are eyeing the Bob Crane Community Center as a place to be. As the holiday season approaches, gift cards that can be used toward membership fees are available for sale. Sales can be processed online (electronic gift card) through our Rec Trac portal and in person (physical card) at the Municipal Services Center or Senior Center. Gift cards can be purchased in any amount and funds are available for five years from the date of purchase. Pre-Sales In addition to gift cards, people can sign-up for their membership in advance of the facility opening. We anticipate opening Community Center membership sales early in 2025 that will be effective upon opening. More information will be available as an opening date is scheduled.

Employment It will take a team of employees to operate the facility throughout the planned hours of operation. Part-time position opportunities include: • Building Attendant

Park Updates & Capital Improvement Projects

Earlier this year, UA Parks & Rec Department began the community engagement process for two exciting upcoming projects. This information will be instrumental in helping guide UA Parks & Rec on the future of these facilities to better meet the needs of the community. Devon Toddler Pool The first was the Devon Toddler Pool, which is scheduled for replacement in 2025. Over 400 residents participated and provided input. Most Important Activities for the Renovated Toddler Area • Shallow Open Water for Children Under 5 • Shaded Lounging Areas • Age Appropriate Splash Features • Zero Entry Access to Water • Area for Children Under 5 that is Separate from the Main Pool What Residents Love About Devon Toddler Pool • Separation and Safety • Size and Depth • Shade and Comfort • Maintenance and Cleanliness

Considerations Moving Forward • Design: Balance between simplicity and adding engaging features that enhance the pool’s appeal. • Safety: Ensure any changes prioritize safety, including accessible facilities and clear visibility for lifeguards. • Community Preferences: Respect the pool’s role as a peaceful, family-friendly option while potentially adding modest enhancements to appeal to a wider range of users. Based on this community input, Parks & Rec worked with our consultant, MSA Sport, to develop a concept for the replacement of the toddler pool feature. The concept would work within a similar footprint to the current pool, while adding several enhancements, such as: • A zero entry to allow for easier access for all users. • Low spray elements to add an interactive feature to the pool. • The gutter of the new pool would be designed for easier access, while still providing a place for care givers to sit on the edge. • The surrounding deck would be replaced. • The benches would be replaced with a better variety of seating options. • A fence would be provided between the toddler pool and the main pool. This is a State requirement as is a separate filtration system for the toddler pool. By working within the current footprint, the new concept would preserve the existing shade structures and trees. The design team is also exploring the possibility of adding steps into the main pool for easier access for users that do not feel comfortable using the ladders. Overall, while there’s strong support for maintaining Devon’s current charm, there’s also a clear desire for thoughtful updates that enhance its appeal and functionality for families with young children. Balancing these desires will be key in the renovation process. A detailed design will be completed in early 2025 with the renovation scheduled to begin at the conclusion of the 2025 swim season.

Fancyburg Park The second round of community engagement focused on Fancyburg Park with over 900 residents providing feedback. Most Important Activities to be Included in the Master Plan • Year-Round Restrooms • Natural Areas (Woods/Meadows) • Traditional Playground • Nature Play Areas • Paved Walking Paths

Overall, the feedback emphasizes the importance of balancing modern amenities while maintaining the park’s natural charm. During the fall of 2024, the Edge Group, a Columbus based landscape architecture and urban design firm contracted by UA Parks & Rec,developed ideas for Fancyburg Park that were presented to the community at Park and Recreation Advisory Board and City Council meetings in early November. The concept developed by Edge is focused on enhancing and replacing many of the current features in the park, including the playground and shelter, while also providing opportunities to expand the natural feel of the park with meadow plantings and naturalized areas. One of the biggest changes proposed in the master plan is the inclusion of a new four-season shelter that could be sized to serve as a new day camp location. The plan also proposes the relocation of the maintenance yard – tentatively scheduled to occur in 2026 – to the corner of the park in order to open up more space within the central area. The goal of the park master plan is to enhance Fancyburg’s versatility and appeal, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for all community members by blending recreational opportunities with the beauty of its natural surroundings. Planning will continue in 2025, as more detailed concepts are developed, along with additional opportunities for public input. The park is scheduled for renovation in 2027 and 2028. Learn more about Fancyburg renovations, including project concepts, by scanning the QR code below.

• Nature Trails • Park Shelters • Open Lawn • Off-Street Parking • Sports Fields • Accessible Play Options What Residents Love About Fancyburg Park • Natural Spaces and Trails • Playground and Sports Facilities • Community Gathering • Location and Accessibility • Size and Open Space • Variety of Activities Areas for Improvement • Nature and Environmental Focus • More Modern Amenities • Safety and Accessibility • Recreational Enhancements • Parking and Infrastructure • Community and Aesthetic Features

As we stand on the cusp of an exciting new chapter with the opening of the Bob Crane Community Center, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the rich history of the Upper Arlington Senior Center. Nestled within three modular buildings originally designed as “temporary structures” for Tremont Elementary School in 1958, the Senior Center has transformed into a beloved hub for the Upper Arlington community. Celebrating Our History: The Upper Arlington Senior Center

Over the past 30 years, the Upper Arlington Senior Center has blossomed into a dynamic space where participants can engage in a wide array of programs. From art and history to technology, games, fitness, and wellness, there’s something for everyone. The memories made here—laughter shared, friendships forged, skills learned—will always hold a special place in hearts around Upper Arlington.

In 1978, the City moved its Senior Center operations into one of these buildings, and by 1985, all three structures were buzzing with activity. For just $1 a year, the City rented the space from Upper Arlington Schools, nurturing a vibrant environment that would become a second home for many. The property was purchased from Upper Arlington Schools in 1991.

The new Bob Crane Community Center is on the horizon, promising even more opportunities for all generations in the community. With modern facilities and expanded programs, we’re poised to create new memories and experiences that cherish our past while embracing the “golden” future. Join us in celebrating our journey and the bright future ahead! We invite everyone to be part of this new chapter at the Bob Crane Community Center, where the spirit of community and connection will continue to thrive.
