This allows you to view all our offerings within a category, since many programs cross traditional age groupings. This change is in response to customer feedback and has also resulted in a new “multi-generational” age group that highlights such programs. We are at an exciting juncture for the new Community Center, as we seek bids for construction. A series of updates and legislative items are planned for City Council in March, and as always, the latest news on this project can be found at uacommunitycenter.com. The Upper Arlington Community Foundation, with the help of the Upper Arlington Community Center Capital Campaign, is nearing its $8M goal to secure private support for the project. With a tax-deductible gift of $250, the community is invited to see themselves in the future gathering space a by including a photo of their choice in a mosaic that will be displayed for all to enjoy. How will your family, neighborhood, or teammates celebrate this opportunity? Visit togetherua.org to learn more (or see page 42). In 2022, the PLAY UA Financial Assistance program provided over $7,000 of assistance to 35 families for pool/tennis passes and program registrations. PLAY UA is designed to support community members who face financial barriers that may prevent them from participating in our programs. Information and an application for participation in the program is available at upperarlingtonoh.gov/parks-recreation/play-ua-financial assistance-program/. A new UA Performance Series will be offered this year, showcasing different venues and approaches to our annual outdoor concerts. The series includes Party on the Plaza, Music at Miller, Arts on Arlington, the Labor Day Arts Festival and a Songwriter Social, showcasing the talents of local performers, artists and artisans while providing an enjoyable experience for the entire community. Look for details in the Experience section. We are hiring for seasonal positions including day camp, pools (lifeguard, office and manager), parks maintenance, facility operations (barn, shelters and senior center) and Safety Town. Please consider joining our team in providing our community a vast array of recreation programs and services. Use the QR code to learn more. I do hope you take time to Enrich Experience and Explore with us!
This issue of the Activity Guide brings you many of our community’s favorite programs, events and seasonal offerings. You also may have noticed that this edition marks the launch of the Parks & Recreation Department’s new brand. For some time, we have wanted to develop an identifying look and feel for our department that captures the essence of who we are and illustrates the comprehensive set of programs and services that we offer. The Community Center design process provided the perfect time to develop our new brand, as we eagerly look forward to bringing existing and new programming opportunities under one roof for enjoyment by all in our community. Over the course of 2023, you will begin to see the new Parks & Rec brand reflected in our publications and promotional items, when you participate in our programs and events, and as you enjoy activities within our physical spaces. Over the course of many months, a team comprised of Department Staff, City leadership and Community Affairs members worked closely with a design consultant, brought on as part of the Community Center detailed design process, to create the new brand. The Parks & Rec brand builds on the City’s brand – previously launched in 2019 – and has been purposely designed to provide both consistency and flexibility within an easily recognizable set of design elements, color palette, fonts and photography style. As you look through the Activity Guide, you will see the brand in action in several ways. Not only have we refreshed the look, we have reorganized our programs, events and services within three overarching pillars that reflect who we are and what we do, while simplifying the user experience: Enrich – opportunities for education, enhancement, instruction and education available through our recreation program offerings Experience – where people can encounter, meet, view, listen and enjoy our community events, galleries and performing arts activities Explore – showcasing the places, facilities and destinations that we can all enjoy in different ways, from our parks, shelters and rental facilities to our outdoor pools and tennis facilities The Table of Contents page, pillar content summaries and sidebars can assist as you navigate this new approach to organizing our programs and offerings. Then, as you ready to begin registering for programs and pool passes, you will find a similarly redesigned homepage for our online registration process, at parks.uaoh.net. Within the Enrich pillar, we have moved away from the youth, adult and senior programming sections you have been used to. Under our new approach, programs are categorized by type – such as Arts & Culture and Wellness & Fitness – then by age.

Park Updates & Capital Improvement Projects
Northam Park 2023 West Athletic Field Renovation This spring, site work will begin for renovations of the west athletic fields at NorthamPark. This project continues a series of improvements within the park that began in 2022 with the installation of underground stormwater infrastructure. This year’s improvements will repair areas impacted by the initial project andwill regrade the existingmulti-purpose field space to improve drainage. It will also provide newdrain inlets, underdrains, an irrigation systemand reseeding of the fields. The replacement of diamonds 1 and 4 are part of this project, andwill include new infields, fencing, backstops and dugouts. Onsite work is anticipated to begin late spring or early summer andwill wrap up by the fall. Once work is complete, it will be necessary to keep the fields offline for one year so that the new turf can become fully established before reopening to play. Future Northam Park Improvements The Department will continue to move forward with detailed designs for other improvements within Northam Park. The replacement of the Park Service Building and renovation of the Tennis Complex was put on hold in 2022 when construction bids came in higher than anticipated due to inflationary market forces. Plans for these improvements will be revisited in 2023 to prioritize improvements and develop a project scope that can be accommodated within the available budget. It is anticipated that an updated scope of work will be presented to City Council in May of 2023. Pending Council direction, the plans will be finalized later this year, with construction expected to occur in 2024.
City in Receipt of Urban Canopy Restoration Grant
We are pleased to announce that the City is one of several Ohio communities awarded the Urban Canopy Restoration Grant. This is a federal grant from the US Forest Service that is administered by our local Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Urban Forestry. The purpose of the grant is to help communities who have lost significant canopy coverage as a result of invasive insects and disease (like the Emerald Ash Borer), extreme weather events, and development pressures. The City is matching the $25,000 in grant funds for a $50,000 investment to restore the forest canopy of Northwest Kiwanis Park; one of the areas most impacted by the loss of Ash trees. The City plans to plant a minimum of 70 large species native trees as well as the supplies and staff to ensure that the trees survive. We are excited to utilize this grant to facilitate and expand on the efforts spent in this area over the last year. For updates on this project as well as other natural areas in parks visit: https://upperarlingtonoh. gov/parks-recreation/parks-naturalized-area management-plan/
The Community Relations Committee (CRC) encourages residents to visit Mallway Park in early April to enjoy the blossoms of 21 cherry trees planted in the Veterans Plaza area. The Greater Columbus Cherry Blossom Festival provides another opportunity for the region to celebrate spring and learn about Japanese culture. Visit the CRC website, at uacommunityrelations.com for more details on this year’s event.

EXPERIENCE
The Concourse Gallery serves to highlight the City’s ongoing commitment to the arts through revolving and diverse exhibits that are educational, engaging and accessible for all residents and visitors.
The Arlington Gallery is located by the Concourse Gallery near the Parks & Rec Office. The purpose of the Arlington Gallery is to highlight local talent and showcase artists who live and work in Upper Arlington.
High School Student Exhibit March 30–April 29 Experience one of our most popular exhibits of the year, works by students creating art in our schools. The Concourse Gallery is filled with artwork by talented students in a variety of mediums. Undesign the Redline June 1–July 7 Reception: Thursday, June 1 | 5-7pm Explore the history of structural racism caused by the 1938 redlining maps and how this inequality continues to impact our communities today, focusing on the ways in which we can come together to “undesign” these systems with intentionality. View the YWCA’s art collection featuring artwork created by local artists, portraying themes inspired by the effects of redlining in Columbus.
Catherine Lang-Cline March 20–June 2
UA resident Catherine Lang Cline creates contemporary art for people that believe real art makes a room. After graduating with a degree in fine art, Lang Cline’s career went down a different path than expected, until her soul called her back to the fine arts and creating acrylic paintings. Award-winning UA artist, Ron Mlicki, has a passion for capturing a person’s mood and their unique personality and surroundings in his paintings. Mlicki graduated from the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Ohio and has studied with nationally recognized artist, Burton Silverman.
