Spring Summer 2026 Activity Guide
THE HISTORY OF SOCIAL SECURITY | 50+ YRS Van Young An interesting perspective on the Social Security Act of 1935, including how and why the program was created and how much it has evolved over time. We learn about what reasons and motivations our politicians had at the inception, compared to what the program has become today. Social Security represents a huge spending chunk of our national budget and is a big reason why our national debt is so high. A great history lesson about a program almost all of us “seniors” have come to rely on. 552520 A 1:30-3:30 pm Th 4/9 BCCC, Level 2, Program Room A $5 R-BCCC M | $6 NR COLUMBUS THE STORY OF A CITY | 50+ YRS Ed Lentz Ed Lentz has been an historian of America and of central Ohio for the past 50 years. What can we learn about aging from films? How are older people portrayed on the silver screen? These are two of the questions we explore in this four-session movie and discussion experience. Each two-hour class session consists of watching a thought-provoking film with a theme about aging or with older main characters, and then discussing the issues raised by the movie. Cost of admission covers the cost of staff time to administer the program, no additional charge for the movies. 4/7 - Thelma (2024): 93-year-old Thelma is scammed out of $10,000 and sets out to reclaim her money. 4/14 - On Golden Pond (1981): An estranged daughter spends time with her family who learn how to communicate with each other. 4/21 - Away From Her (2006): A husband puts his wife into an Alzheimer’s care facility where she transfers her affection to another man. 4/28 - A Man Called Otto (2023): A grumpy older man who has given up on life finds meaning in his association with the young daughter of an immigrant family living next door. 552615 A 10 am-Noon Tu 4/7-4/28 BCCC, Level 5, Event Center C $20 R-BCCC M | $24 NR O 4 sessions SHAKESPEARE: JULIUS CAESAR | 50+ YRS Brad Bradford Have you ever wanted to read a Shakespeare play but did not do so, because, for whatever reason, you thought it just was not for you?
