Youth Outdoor Swim Lessons The Learn-to-Swim program offers American Red Cross swim lessons for ages six months through adult, at all skill levels. Learn-to-Swim teaches water safety skills in logical group classes at all of our facilities.The Learn-to-Swim Program focuses on building skills one step at a time. By giving participants the opportunity to master one element before moving on to the next. Sessions Participants receive 10, 30-minute lessons (Monday-Friday) (eight guaranteed) which teach swimming and water safety skills, including those listed below: • Water entry and exit • Breath control and underwater swimming • Buoyancy • Changing direction and position treading • Swimming on front back and side • General and personal water safety Student to Instructor Ratio Instructors receive certification/training through UA Parks & Rec Signage is provided to show where to meet instructors on deck. Instructors spend part of the first class assessing skills. Instructors reserve the right to change placement and class time to provide the best possible learning experience for everyone. If you are unsure of your child’s level, please be sure to give us a call before registering. Make up Classes In the event we need to cancel a lesson due to conditions out of our control (weather, mechanical, etc.) we will make every attempt to schedule a make-up lesson pending availability of both instructors and facility. All make-up classes will be scheduled Saturday mornings. Cancellation and Refund Policy Please see page 4.

Lesson Descriptions Parent/Guardian and Child Aquatics For children between the ages of six months and approximately three years. Familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Parent/guardians are expected to get in the water with the child. Level 1 (Seahorse): Introduction to Water Skills For the beginner who is comfortable in the water. Swimmers work on: bobbing, going under water, supported front and back floating, supported rolling over from front to back and back to front, supported gliding, supported flutter kick, supported front crawl arms and jumping in. Level 2 (Otter): Fundamental Aquatic Skills Swimmers should already be able to: float on front and back and put their head under water. Swimmers work on: independent front and back floating, independent rolling over from front to back and back to front, independent front and back glides, front crawl arms and kicks, back crawl arms and kicks, retrieving underwater objects, and jumping into water over their head. Level 3 (Starfish): Stroke Development Swimmers should already be: comfortable swimming front stroke and swimming on their back. Swimmers work on: gliding, freestyle with side breathing, backstroke, breast stroke and dolphin kicks, retrieving objects in deeper water, treading water, jumping into deep water and compact dives. Level 4 (Porpoise): Stroke Improvement Swimmers should already be able to: swim front and back crawl 25 yards. Swimmers work on: rotary breathing, freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and sidestroke, whip kick and breaststroke, intro to turning at wall, treading water with modified scissors, and diving in kneeling position. Level 5 (Swordfish): Stroke Refinement Swimmers should already be able to: swim freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke 25 yards, scissors kick, whip kick, treading water, and dive. Swimmers work on: alternate breathing, stride jump, refinement of: freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, dolphin kick and butterfly, open turn on front and back, feet-first surface dive, and treading water.
