Fall 2023

Park Updates & Capital Improvements

Bob Crane Community Center

Northam Tennis and Service Building The next phase of work will focus on renovating the Northam Tennis Complex & Park Service Building. After undergoing an additional study and design process – made necessary when 2022 renovations bids exceeded the budget by approximately 30% – UA Parks & Rec has begun work to finalize designs for a reconstruction project that will be comprised of eight-to-nine clay courts (down from 12) and a reconfigured park service building including year-round restrooms. This phase is to be bid out in the fall of 2023 and if bids fall within the previously approved budget of $3.9 million, construction will likely begin early in 2024.

2023 has been a busy year for construction. You may have noticed some of the big changes happening along Tremont Road as work has begun to go vertical on the construction of the Bob Crane Community Center. Since breaking ground in April, the construction team has made a lot of progress install ing the deep concrete footers and columns that will support the building. They have started installing the thousands of feet of conduit and piping needed for the mechanical systems and, beginning in August, will go vertical as they start to form up the mezzanine level. The team will continue with the rest of the support structure throughout this year and are expected to top out in February of 2024. Opening of the Community Center is anticipated in the Spring/Summer of 2025. Follow the construction at uacommunitycenter.com , where you can register for email updates. Work is wrapping up on the Northam West Athletic Field Renovations project. The fields have been regraded and the team has installed new area drains, underdrains and irrigation. They have also installed the new backstops, dugouts and fencing at the two ball diamonds. They will wrap up work in August as they bring in new topsoil, perform the final grading and reseed the fields. As a reminder, once work is complete, the fields will be kept offline for approximately one year to give the new turf time to establish and make sure the fields are in top condition when they are ready for use again later in 2024. Northam Park Open Space Study The reduction of the Northam Tennis courts creates an approximately .44-acre area of the park that will be available, located between the courts and Tremont Pool. Recognizing that this presents an opportunity to rethink how this space could best be utilized, the department has begun a study process that is considering potential uses and ranking those uses using a set of scoring criteria, with plans to seek public input to help identify the best option. If this process is completed by early Fall, it may be possible for the department to use additional City Capital Improvement Program funds to bid this project as an add-on option with the Northam Tennis and Service Building project, so that these improvements could be undertaken at the same time.
